PADI Rescue Diver - Scuba Diving since 2018
My name is Rob Helkey and to many in the area I'm simply known as the guy on the boat with the three-legged dog. In many cases, this is how I have had to introduce myself! This year I celebrated my 17th annual 29th birthday and I have found I enjoy life more fully everyday!
I was born in Heidelberg, Germany on an Army base to amazing, supportive parents. As this point in my life they are as much my best friends as they are my parents. I was raised in the rural Midwest along the Mississippi about an hour and a half north of St. Louis. At age sixteen I met my wife and fell forever in love. However, she was eighteen and heading off to college so we split. After twenty five years of zero contact we reconnected and got married and have been having one amazing adventure after another. Combined we have eight children who live in various places across the country.
Early 2018, we decided to cash in my retirement from the Missouri Department of Corrections, where I was a Prison Housing Unit Manager, and we bought our 1988, 4280 Cruisers Yacht in Jacksonville, FL. We had never operated a boat that size in our lives but decided to just go for it. We spent a short time making sure it was sea-worthy and then took off for the Keys by way of the ICW (Inter-Coastal Waterway). We learned a lot along the way, to include that our three-legged dog, Nino, loves dolphins and riding on the bow of the boat.
I am now settled in Key Largo and live on the very canal where Rainbow Reef/Ocean Divers launch their boats. I made up my mind, from watching the boats go in and out and interacting with the crew, I wanted to be a part of this organization. After speaking with management, I was told that it would take some time to become a dive instructor to be hired but I might be suited for office staff. I was then told I should get some dive experience if were to be employed there. So as soon as I could I became Open Water Certified and the very next week I found myself working with an amazing group of people, who are as wonderful as they are passionate.
I fully intend to continue in my dive training and make Rainbow Reef/Ocean Divers my next retirement.
